Freeimages Team Kiva Update 2012

As some of you may already know we have been donating our freeimageslive.co.uk advertising revenue to kiva microloans for the past couple of years. In July we welcomed dreamstime as a main advertiser to the site (and we'd like to thank them for their support, without the income they bring the site would not be able to continue running).

There were some big changes to the structure of freeimages and freeimageslive in 2011, as the sites are now more integrated, this year is the last year we can separate the revenue from our community driven site and the main site; we're open to suggestions about how we calculate/distribute next years income from freeimageslive.

This year we have been able to loan a further $250 in assistance to worthy causes via our lending team. I'd like to personally thank all of the photographers who have shared their images on freeimageslive and made this possible.

Site Update

Over the past few weeks you might have noticed we've been busy updating http://www.freeimages.co.uk with a new look and some improvements to our image search features. We have started displaying images from dreamstime in our sidebar: as well as 11 million commercial images dreamstime also have an extensive collection of 200,000 free stock photos.

We have also made some upgrades to our photographers / contributors site at http://www.freeimageslive.co.uk. Images uploaded by our contributors that have been hand selected as featured images are now featured front and centre on the home page of the main site.

1000 Free Stock Images for Facebook Members

We've added a further 500 free stock photos to our exclusive for facebook fans collection; bringing the total to 1000 images, more than 1GB of free downloads.
You can access the images by clicking on the "free images" tab on our facebook page.
The gallery contains more than 250 backgrounds and textures including natural, grunge, patterns, water, urban; plus almost 750 stock images covering environmental issues, outdoors, transport and landmarks, light and colour, urban, technology and grunge subjects.

Freeimageslive Team Kiva

When we launched the community side of freeimages at freeimageslive.co.uk (where photographers and designers can share their work with images users and other designers), it was one of our unofficial goals to eventually be able to share advertising revenue across our contributor community – to say thank you for sharing your images.

This years ad revenue was somewhat less than we planned, doing the sums would have made each photographers payout tiny (as we expected to be the case at first), so this year we are giving the profit we made on selling ad space to worthy causes.

To this end we have just launched a kiva micro loan team at http://www.kiva.org/team/free_images_for_credit. We have already loaned the freeimageslive ad revenue and more than doubled the amount to make a second loan (like we said the ads did not make much last year! – hopefully every little helps).

We know that at this time of year most people are not exactly feeling flushed with spare money, but if you are a kiva member, or if you have not heard of them or microloans before now then we urge you to at least read about it. New Underwater FreeImages

Tilt Shift Maker

Tiltshiftmaker.com is a free website that allows you crate an effect similar to that produced using a tilt shift lens (the wrong way). It allows you modify a suitable image to make it appear to have a narrow depth of field; this fools the eye into thinking that the image is of a model or miniature subject. The best way to understand it is to look at the samples below or some of the sample images in the tiltshiftmaker website.

Not all images are suitable, if you could fake the effect with any image then there would be no need for the lens. It works best with images that already have small subjects, aerial photos or those taken from buildings, images of architecture also seem to work well, the only way really to know is to give it a try.

We tried it on a few of our images, it was as simple of cutting and pasting from the “copy image location” of our preview photos into tilstshitmaker to give it a test. As an alternative you can try out some of their sample images, browse a gallery of images other people have 'miniaturised' or upload a photo from your own computer. Here's the results from a couple of images from freeimageslive:

New Search Features

We've added some new search fetaures to the site. Our new image search contains preview pictures, stemmed keywording (plurals are automatically searched). You can now add freeimageslive search to your browsers opensearch bar (firefox 2+ and explorer 7+)

You can also subscribe to xml feed of new images added to the site and you will automatically be informed in your feed aggregator (such as google reader) when new images matching your terms are added, to get the feed URL just perform a search and the RSS icon at the bottom of the search results will link to the feed. more about this on our developers information page where developers can find more information about integrating the search into their application or website.

FreeimagesLive is Alive

We are proud to announce the launch of a new section of freeimages which allows users to photographer, illustrators and designers to upload their work to the site for use by others. In doing so our contributors can receive feedback from other visitors in the form of comments and can use their images/designs to leverage valuable self-promotion and SEO improvements.

Users who use such images are required to link back to the images page on the site and include the contributors profile name as a credit line.
Each uploaded image is accompanied by a profile description of the user who contributed it, and each user profile can include link(s) to a website the contributor chooses.
Over recent years "Can I upload my own images" has been one of the most common requests we have heard at freeimages - now we are ready to accept those photographs.

Members Area
This news feed will eventually replace our mailing list news updates. If you still want to be informed about updates via email you can subscribe using the google feedburner signup box on the freeimageslive home page.
